Why Shop Local? Top Ten Reasons to Shop Local
We all know how fun it is to shop locally in Chicago, but there’s more to it:
1. Protect Local Character and Prosperity - Chicago is unlike any other city in the world. By choosing to support locally owned businesses, you help maintain Chicago’s diversity and distinctive flavor.
2. Community Well-Being - Locally owned businesses build strong neighborhoods by sustaining communities, linking neighbors, and by contributing more to local causes.
3. Local Decision Making - Local ownership means that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and who will feel the impacts of those decisions.
4. Keeping Dollars in the Local Economy - Your dollars spent in locally-owned businesses have three times the impact on your community as dollars spent at national chains. When shopping locally, you simultaneously create jobs, fund more city services through sales tax, invest in neighborhood improvement and promote community development.
5. Job and Wages - Locally owned businesses create more jobs locally and, in some sectors, provide better wages and benefits than chains do.
6. Entrepreneurship - Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class.
7. Public Benefits and Costs - Local stores in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services relative to big box stores and strip shopping malls.
8. Environmental Sustainability - Local stores help to sustain vibrant, compact, walkable town centers-which in turn are essential to reducing sprawl, automobile use, habitat loss, and air and water pollution.
9. Competition - A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term.
10. Product Diversity - A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based, not on a national sales plan, but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. |

Habit just added another name to it's constantly evolving roster of eco-friendly lines. Canopy Verde creates adorable bags that do not sacrifice style for the environment.
"Behind Canopy Verde’s “modern meets earth-friendly” principle is the concept of combining modern design with an environmentally friendly approach. To achieve this, we thought carefully about each step of the process, from design to manufacturing to packaging. In selecting the raw material for the collection, we scoured the fabric market in China and exhausted our local contacts to find certified suppliers of eco-friendly fabrics." “In creating Canopy Verde, I wanted to be very thoughtful about any component that was put into the bag as well as the construction methods," explains founder Linda Wong. “Special attention was paid to everything down to the lining and the dyeing process.”
Given Linda’s Chinese roots and her upbringing in Taiwan, it is personally meaningful for her to have the opportunity to encourage Chinese manufacturers to be more environmentally responsible. “Working with my current factory, I’ve found that the best way to improve environmental practices is by showing them the market opportunity of eco-friendly products,” she says. In addition, all of Canopy Verde’s materials are source locally, which helps to eliminate the transportation impact and also spurs demand of Chinese-made eco-friendly materials.
For the first season, we used organic cotton/bamboo blend for the main material and lining. The leather is chrome-free (see question below for more information). The dyeing process is also certified by OEKO-TEX, an independent European organization, that no harmful chemicals and substances were used. The embroidery thread is free of AZO, a harmful chemical. We also used recycled plastic from a local supplier for the packaging. As much as possible, we try to use FSC-certified and recycled paper in our business correspondence and marketing material.
Each season we will be evaluating our processes and taking steps to further minimize our ecological footprint." |
